Sonny Jr. is in town and he spent time with two of Joe's classes yesterday - first off, he joined the Rhythm and Chording class in the afternoon to talk about Sonny Terry playing and later in the Level IV class talk turned to amplifiers.
Sonny has spent 20 years modifying and producing amplifiers for harp players and he has tons of great advice and knowledge to share. His assistance started via email conversations with Highway RickEy before he even arrived and he advised us on a new class amplifer - we're now happy to be playing through a vintage Kalamazoo and we played it last night for the first time. Sounds great!
Sonny described and demonstrated "break up" and talked about how to change amp tubes to improve the break up and headroom of an amp. He talked speakers, tubes and rectifiers and gave us a great demonstration simple changes can make by tweaking a stock reissue Bassman. That may be the loudest amp we've had in B1, but it got the point across and sounded much improved!
It was a great evening and the first time we've covered this topic in B1. Thanks for giving so generously of your time and knowledge, Sonny!
